Microwave technology

Principle of operation

The method is an alternative to the widespread incinerator and autoclave methods. It treats the waste in a microwave field, which ensures optimal heating from the inside out – a result of the high-frequency oscillation of the particles.

The unit is designed for thermal disinfection of infectious wet and/or dry waste, liquids and more. Treatment uses high-frequency microwave energy once water is added.

The process disinfects effectively even closed and hollow forms, thanks to even heating of both their surface and their interior. After treatment, the residue has the characteristics of safe municipal waste.

Four steps

How it works

  1. 1. Collection

Waste is collected directly in the MR1 container, at the place where it is produced.

  2. 2. Loading

The container is placed in the chamber with no transfer or sorting.

  3. 3. Disinfection

Once water is added, microwave energy heats the waste evenly from the inside out. One cycle takes about 35 minutes.

  4. 4. Disposal

The residue has the characteristics of safe municipal waste, and the container is reused.

Applications

What the MR1 treats

The MR1 can treat:

  • Used empty blood bags
  • Drainage equipment
  • Needles, syringes and other single-use instruments
  • Single-use protective equipment and used dressings
  • Haemodialysis consumables, culture media in Petri dishes
  • Other
Benefits

Advantages

  • Meets all the goals in the “Human medicine waste” section of the NWMP (National Waste Management Plan)
  • Collection, transport and treatment that are safe for staff, with no additional handling (transfer and sorting before disinfection)
  • Waste is disinfected where it is generated – no risk is passed on to the public sector
  • Waste is disinfected together with its collection containers – no chemical disinfectants are needed for the containers
  • Lower overall cost of managing hazardous healthcare waste
  • Capacity can be upgraded when needed
  • Technological compatibility with the future construction of plants for processing and recycling non-hazardous waste
Low management cost

Lower costs

Operating costs are reduced through:

Low cost of consumables

No external steam supply

Reusable container

Blue container in the MR1 chamber with the door open

No transport costs

Because disinfection takes place inside the hospital.

No additional chemical agents or labour for disinfecting the containers
